Hand-woven Persian Gabbeh carpets are made in the Shiraz region of Iran. Gabbeh carpets are hand-woven carpets made by the Qashqai people.
This Gabbeh has a lion motif and is finely woven and feels dense against the skin.
In the photo it looks a deep, deep red, but the actual base color is a mixture of vermilion and maroon. The lion's body is woven in a deep golden yellow.
The design features a lion holding a sword with the sun peeking out from behind it, a design that was previously used on the Iranian flag.
Lions symbolize power and strength, but this Gabbeh lion has a unique face that contrasts with its strength.
The bottom right is woven with images of the bustling life of the Shiraz region, including plants and animals.
