This is a hand-woven Persian carpet from Kashan, Iran.
Silk Persian carpets woven in Kashan often have pale colors such as white and cream as base colors, but this carpet has a cream base.
There is a medallion in the center and intricate arabesque patterns woven into the piece that spread out to the outside.
Silk Persian carpets are characterized by their soft, smooth feel and beautiful, elegant luster that brings out the patterns and colors.
Also, the way the colour of a hand-woven carpet looks different depends on the direction of the fibres, called grain or counter-grain. (See images 2 and 3.)
