This Persian carpet was woven in Tabriz, in northwestern Persia.
The design of this carpet is called "Mahi pattern", which means "fish" in Persian. This design depicts a fish leaping on the water's surface, and is considered a symbol of prosperity and happiness in Persian culture, and is said to be auspicious.
The carpets are made from cork wool, a soft wool obtained from lambs. Silk is used for the details of the patterns, giving them a three-dimensional look.
While Persian carpets are generally woven by women, the carpets from Tabriz are woven by men, which means that the knotting and tightening is done more forcefully, making the carpets more durable.
