Tabriz is the capital of East Azerbaijan Province and the carpets woven there are renowned for their beauty and quality. These carpets are characterised by a beautiful, calm and refined finish.
The materials used include precious cork wool, which can only be obtained in small quantities from the neck of a lamb, and white silk is used around the intricate patterns to give the design a three-dimensional look.
The design includes a traditional pattern called Mahi, which means fish in Persian. In addition, a medallion with a flower-like design is woven in the center, and the fineness of the weave is truly a work of art. The surface pile is short and very durable.
Hand-woven carpets have a characteristic that the direction of the carpet's fibers, known as grain and counter-grain, changes the way the color shades appear depending on the direction in which it is laid.
