The difference between Persian and Turkish carpets

Persian carpets are hand-woven carpets from Iran (formerly Persia).

Turkish carpets refer to hand-woven carpets made in Türkiye (Anatolia region).

Generally, Persian carpets are knotted using the "Persian knot (asymmetrical knot)", which is a knot in which the thread is mainly wrapped around one of the two warp threads, while Turkish carpets are knotted using the "Turkish knot (symmetrical knot)", which is a knot in which the thread is evenly wrapped around the two warp threads.

The Persian knot is suitable for creating complex and beautiful patterns because the knots are small and delicate, while the Turkish knot has the advantage of firmly securing the knot and producing a durable finish that is resistant to wear.

*However, there are exceptions depending on the region. For example, in the Tabriz region of Iran, Turkish knots are sometimes used even on Persian carpets.
