The carpets are usually woven in the northern part of the country, but Afghan refugees also produce them in Pakistan. Traditionally, Afghan carpets are woven in shades of red, with darker tones being predominant. The patterns feature gul (a continuous octagonal pattern) and octagonal stars, with blue or beige floral designs woven against a deep red background.
The materials used include wool sourced from sheep and goats, and they are woven in nearly every size.
The weaving of Afghan carpets is an ancient tradition that has continued for thousands of years.
