Gabbehs are long-pile, handwoven carpets cultivated by the nomadic Qashqai people of southern Iran. Used for generations as tent floor coverings and as dowries, they are painstakingly woven from sheep's wool, spun by hand, dyed with plants, and knotted one by one. In 2010, the weaving technique was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The word "Gabbeh" means "roughly" in Persian, and is characterized by its rustic, warm texture.
One of the attractions is the warmth that can only come from "handmade" work, where you can sense the wishes and background that went into the patterns. Even if they are made by the same weaver, no two are exactly alike, so there is the joy of finding a piece that is just yours. Wool rugs, with their long pile and tight weave, are cool and refreshing in the summer and warm in the winter, making them comfortable to use all year round.
The key to choosing a mat is to start with the size. We recommend a size of about 150 x 200 cm or 170 x 240 cm for the living room, and 80 x 120 cm (for a house) or 60 x 90 cm (for an apartment) for the entrance mat. By choosing your favorite color and pattern, you can create a piece that you can use for a long time.
