The difference between Persian and Turkish carpets

ペルシャ絨毯とトルコ絨毯の比較

Persian carpets are high-quality carpets that have been hand-woven in Iran (formerly Persia) since ancient times. Turkish carpets refer to traditional hand-woven carpets made in Turkey (Anatolia region). Both Persian and Turkish carpets are known for their world-class quality, but the differences between them can be seen mainly in the weaving techniques and pattern designs.

Persian carpets are woven using the single knot method (single knot, Persian knot), which ties a thread to one warp thread. On the other hand, Turkish carpets are woven using the double knot method (double knot, Turkish knot), which ties a thread to two warp threads. The single knot method has a smaller knot, so more detailed patterns can be created. The double knot method has the advantage that the knot tightens the more it is used, making the carpet stronger.

Generally speaking, Persian carpets have a high knot density (number of knots) and can be woven with very intricate designs. On the other hand, Turkish carpets often have designs that are less intricate than Persian carpets, but are known for their durability and simple beauty.
