Afghanistan is a country with a long and rich tradition of carpet weaving, known for its stunning mountainous landscapes as well.
The majority of Afghan rugs are woven by Afghan Turkmen and Uzbek artisans. While most weaving takes place in the northern regions of the country, Afghan refugees have also continued the tradition in neighboring Pakistan.
Traditionally, Afghan carpets are characterized by deep red tones, with darker color palettes being the norm. Common motifs include “guls” (repeating octagonal patterns) and eight-pointed stars, often woven with blue or beige floral designs against a rich red background.
The wool used is typically home-produced from sheep or goats, and the rugs are made in almost every size imaginable.
Weaving in Afghanistan is a deeply rooted tradition, one that dates back thousands of years and continues to this day as a vital part of the nation's cultural heritage.
