What is a wool carpet (wool rug)? The characteristics and appeal of natural wool

ウール絨毯の原料となる羊

Wool rugs are carpets made from sheep's wool, a natural material often used in high-quality hand-woven carpets, that is durable and comfortable to the touch.

Wool is a natural animal fiber that has excellent heat retention and moisture regulation properties. The fibers are crimped, which allows it to easily trap air and retain heat. This prevents the floor from getting cold in winter, and absorbs and releases moisture in summer, keeping you cool and comfortable. It is also highly elastic, so it does not easily become worn out even when stepped on for a long time, and it does not easily generate static electricity, so it is also a material that does not easily attract dust or dirt.

Compared to rugs made of synthetic fibers (such as nylon and polypropylene), wool carpets are less likely to catch fire and are therefore safer. Also, compared to cotton rugs, wool has strong, elastic fibers, so it is less likely to leave marks when stepped on and is more durable. In addition, wool contains lanolin, a natural oil, which repels water and makes it less likely to get dirty.

As such, wool carpets are excellent in many ways, such as durability, insulation, moisture-regulating properties, and soft feel, and simply laying them down will bring a refined texture and comfort to your life.

However, because wool rugs are made from natural materials, they are more expensive than synthetic fiber rugs, and you may notice a particular wool smell immediately after purchasing. The smell will fade over time, and can be quickly alleviated by drying the rug in the shade in a well-ventilated area. Also, new wool rugs may shed loose fibers (fine fuzz), but this will gradually subside as you use the rug. Wool rugs become very heavy when wet, so they are not suitable for washing at home, but they can be kept clean by vacuuming them daily.
