Afshar rugs are traditional Persian carpets handwoven by the Afshar tribe in the region surrounding Sirjan, located in Kerman Province in southeastern Iran.

The Afshar people were originally nomadic tribes from the northwest of Iran who migrated to this area around the 17th century. Over time, their unique artistic sense and weaving skills gave rise to what is now widely recognized as “Sirjan rugs.”

The most striking feature of Afshar rugs is their design. These rugs often feature bold, geometric patterns with rhythmic layouts, central medallions, and motifs such as birds or paisleys (boteh), all inspired by the nomadic lifestyle.

Their color palette is rich and earthy, typically based on deep reds and indigo blues, dyed naturally using plant-based dyes. Over time, these natural tones develop even greater depth and character, giving each rug a unique and timeless beauty.

Afshar rugs are made from high-quality wool, offering a soft texture and comfortable thickness underfoot. The weaving is typically done using the Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot), with a knot density of approximately 120,000 to 250,000 knots per square meter—providing reliable durability along with their rustic charm.

These rugs are usually produced in small to medium sizes, making them ideal for modern interiors. They add warmth and personality to minimalist spaces and complement various styles, including Scandinavian, vintage, and Japanese-modern. They work beautifully as centerpieces beneath furniture or even as decorative wall hangings.

Unlike the finely woven city-made Persian rugs, Afshar rugs embrace the bold, expressive spirit of tribal artistry. Their raw beauty and nostalgic appeal bring an authentic, soulful presence to any space.
