Naein is a small town located in the desert region of central Iran, about 140 km east of the ancient city of Isfahan. With a history dating back to before the advent of Islam, it is a land rich in cultural heritage. The town is still home to historical structures such as the Jameh Mosque—built during the Buyid dynasty—and ancient fortresses that offer a glimpse into its storied past.
One of the reasons Naein has gained international recognition is its production of high-quality handwoven Persian rugs. Especially since the 20th century, Naein rugs have been highly praised around the world for their intricate craftsmanship and beauty, earning the town a place among the five major centers of Persian rug production.
History of Naein Rugs
Naein was originally known for producing fine wool cloaks called aba. However, with the spread of Western-style clothing in the 1930s, demand for these cloaks declined. In response, local artisans began applying their advanced weaving techniques to the art of Persian rug making.
This shift was accelerated by the arrival of skilled carpet weavers from neighboring Isfahan. Their expertise, combined with Naein’s traditional craftsmanship, led to the creation of exceptionally high-quality rugs. Over time, Naein earned its reputation as a producer of some of the finest Persian rugs in the world.
The Fineness of Naein Weaving
Naein rugs are graded using a unique system called "La," which refers to the number of twisted threads in the warp. The smaller the La number, the finer the yarn and the more detailed the weave.
Grade (La) | Knot Density (knots/m²) | Characteristics & Quality |
---|---|---|
4La | Approx. 1,000,000–1,300,000 | Extremely fine weave. Due to the complexity and high cost of production, these are rarely available today and are mostly sought after by collectors. |
6La | Approx. 850,000–1,000,000 | Considered the finest among Naein rugs. Known for their delicate and beautiful weaving, they strike a balance between elegance and practicality. |
9La | Approx. 400,000–500,000 | While still finely woven compared to other regions, 9La is considered an entry-level grade for Naein rugs, offering signature designs at more accessible prices. |
Especially the 4La and 6La grades are often woven by master craftsmen at renowned workshops such as the Habibian workshop, which is recognized globally as the pinnacle of Naein rug artistry.
