This is a hand-knotted Persian rug crafted in Tabriz, located in the northwest of Persia.
Tabriz, the capital of East Azerbaijan Province, is renowned for its beautiful and high-quality rugs.
The base color is a deep red, resulting in a beautifully calm and elegant rug. The material used is cork wool, a precious wool that can only be harvested in small quantities from the neck area of lambs, and white silk is used around the intricate patterns to enhance their three-dimensionality.
The design features the traditional Mahi pattern, which means fish in Persian. Additionally, a medallion design resembling blooming flowers is woven in the center, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship that truly qualifies as a work of art. The surface pile is short and exceptionally durable.
Moreover, floral patterns are woven into the white area between the rug and the fringe, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail in this piece.
Hand-knotted rugs have a directionality in the pile, known as 'with the nap' and 'against the nap,' which affects how the colors appear depending on the direction in which the rug is laid.
