Gabbeh

Gabbeh refers to the handmade, coarse rugs created by the nomadic Qashqai tribe in southwestern Persia. The term "Gabbeh" means "primitive" or "unrefined" in Persian. These rugs are characterized by their use of hand-spun wool as the main material and are dyed with natural plant dyes. They are thicker than other Persian rugs, with a thickness of up to 2.5 cm.

The designs are simple, primarily featuring animal motifs. In recent years, in response to European demand, there has been an increase in Gabbeh rugs with colorful and intricate patterns.

Rugs of this style are also produced in India, but they have different characteristics compared to Persian ones, so care should be taken when choosing. In particular, Persian Gabbeh rugs are said to be of higher quality in terms of wool softness and durability.

There are several types of Gabbeh rugs, each with its own name. For example, "Gabbeh Kashkuli" is characterized by particularly fine knots and a short pile.
