Afghanistan is a country with a long carpet history and is particularly attractive for its mountainous landscape.
They are mainly made by Afghan Turkmen and Uzbeks.
Carpets are usually knit in the north of the country, but Afghan refugees have also produced them in Pakistan. Traditionally, Afghan carpets are knit in shades of red, predominantly dark colors. Patterns feature gul (a repeating pattern of octagons) or octagonal stars, knitted with blue or beige floral patterns on a dark red background.
The material is wool produced in-house from sheep and goats, and is woven in almost every size.
Afghan carpet weaving is an ancient tradition that dates back thousands of years.
