Rugs are primarily crafted by Afghan Turkmen and Uzbeks.
They are mainly woven in the northern provinces of the country, as well as in the western city of Herat and the eastern city of Ghazni, but have also been produced in Pakistan by Afghan refugees. Traditionally, Afghan rugs are woven in shades of red, with darker colors being predominant. The patterns are characterized by guls (octagonal repeating patterns) and octagonal stars, featuring floral designs in blue or beige against a deep red background.
The materials used include wool sourced from sheep and goats, and they are woven in almost every size.
The weaving of Afghan rugs is an ancient tradition that has continued for thousands of years.
