The Difference Between Persian and Turkish Rugs

Persian rugs are hand-knotted rugs made in Iran (formerly Persia).

Turkish rugs refer to hand-knotted rugs produced in Turkey (Anatolia region).

Generally, Persian rugs use the "Persian knot (asymmetrical knot)," which involves wrapping the yarn around one of the two vertical threads. In contrast, Turkish rugs utilize the "Turkish knot (symmetrical knot)," where the yarn is evenly wrapped around both vertical threads.

The Persian knot is suitable for complex and beautiful pattern expressions due to its small and delicate knots. The Turkish knot, on the other hand, features tightly secured knots that result in a durable finish, resistant to wear.

However, there are exceptions by region; for example, in the Tabriz area of Iran, Turkish knots may be used even in Persian rugs.
