Koriai carpets are tribal Persian carpets made by the nomadic Kurdish people of western Iran. These carpets are characterised by bright and vibrant colours, often with a large central medallion, classic hexagonal Herati diamond design and bevelled corners within the main border. They were originally woven not commercially, but according to an ancient custom by the weaver women to provide their tribal families with handwoven items of practical value (floor coverings, blankets, sacks, saddle blankets etc.) and provide financial security for future hard times.
Iran is home to around 5 million Kurds, mostly concentrated in the west of the country. Kurdish carpet knotting skills are highly valued, and Koryay carpets are no exception. These carpets are sturdy enough for everyday use, and generally have tight knots and high pile, making them stain-resistant and durable. Once made entirely from wool, they now use cotton for the warp threads.
Kurdish carpets, including Koriay, are usually decorated with geometric patterns and subdued colors, making them suitable for a variety of interior styles. Their durability makes them ideal for rooms that require frequent use or durability. Koriay carpets are usually over 3 meters long, making them suitable for long corridors and large rooms.
