Mashhad was once a small village, but has now grown into a large city with a population of 2 million people in eastern Iran. Mashhad is the capital of Khorasan Razavi Province and the second largest city in Iran. It is considered one of the holiest places in Iran, as it is home to the tomb of the eighth Imam. More than 10 million pilgrims visit the tomb every year, bringing vitality to the city.
The holy city is also famous for its carpet production. Mashhad produces carpets of various qualities in rich colours such as deep reds, blues and ivory, typically featuring a floral pattern surrounding a central medallion, and available in a wide range of sizes.
The wool from Khorasan Razavi province is considered the best in the country, giving Mashhad carpets their soft feel.
